"Food was how my mother expressed her love. No matter how critical or cruel she could seem—constantly pushing me to meet her intractable expectations—I could always feel her affection radiating from the lunches she packed and the meals she prepared for me just the way I liked them."

Today I bring the review of one of my favourite books I've read this year: Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. You probably know her as the lead singer of the indie band Japanese Breakfast but to be completely honest with you, I've never heard about her or knew the band. But this book is a memoir, and, as you know, I'm a sucker for non-fiction. And it really didn't disappoint. It's amazing how all my favourite memoirs are written by musicians (Just Kids, I'm talking about you). But this one it's about growing up as a Korean-American in the United States and she really does a great job of explaining the difficulty of having a mixed-racial identity and feeling as an outsider wherever you are. It's also about Michelle's complicated relationship with her parents, and her experience of losing her mother. As she navigates through her pain and grief, she uses Korean foods she holds dear to commemorate her mother by learning how to cook them. It's very moving. It has been a long time since a book made me cry, but this one really did it. It's impossible not to feel the pain Michelle has as she says goodbye to her mother. It's quite hard for me to review a memoir, after all is someone's real life, all I can say is that this is a must-read. It's beautifully written and full of emotion. Highly recommend.

No, I haven't forgotten about this blog. I just have been through a writer's block lately. I had these photos ready for ages but I just didn't know what to talk about. I just had no inspiration. I wrote a million different things and ended up deleting everything because I just didn't feel it. It felt forced and it didn't feel like me. I just don't know how to explain it, but it's not always easy to write just for fun. I work as a content writer so at the end of the working day and writing again, it's not always easy for me. Sometimes I have a topic in mind and things just flow, other times I just stand in front of the computer, literally looking at myself (these photos) and not knowing what to write about. Just for you to have an idea, this post was already titled: 'What I Like About Autumn' (who cares?), 'I Think I Like This Little Life' (an analogy with the super trendy song and a deep dive into the topic that started feeling a bit too motivational speaker of me) and 'ahsdhaush' (what I write when I don't know what to write about). And here I am turning things around and writing about having nothing to write about, clever, right? But I literally have nothing else to say. No rant. No discussion. I just really wanted to post these photos. I'll try to bring something more interesting next time. I hope you like the outfit at least.

If you follow me on social media, you probably saw that this last weekend I went to Serra da Estrela at Rota das Faias. I really loved it, the hiking trail is so beautiful. You can see the photos in this post, but believe it or not, it's even prettier in real life. But I'll leave all the info in this post so you can know all about it.

'How To Dress Like A Portuguese Girlie', já ouviram, certo? 'First of all, put on some funky pants, then find a shirt that apparently doesn't match' etc, etc. Eu não me visto assim.

'How to dress like a Portuguese girlie', have you heard it? 'First of all, put on some funky pants, then find a shirt that apparently doesn't match' and so on. It's a TikTok trend. And it became viral for people doing it, but also for people criticizing it. Which side I'm on? Honestly, none. I can understand both. On one hand, it's a very beautiful style. It's fun and interesting. Maybe a bit more Danish than Portuguese, but it's just some TikTok content, there's no need to take it so personally and be offended by it. There's always the possibility of doing your own version of the trend like I've seen it before and found it genial. But I can also understand the people who said that Portuguese girls don't dress like this. I don't dress like this. My friends don't dress like this. And, honestly, only a certain type of girl dresses like this *cough cough* "betas" (that, summing up, is a Portuguese word to refer to someone who comes from a wealthy family). And please don't take this the wrong way. We all dress like whatever we want, but is this 'Portuguese girl aesthetic' starting to feel like all the same? Yes, it has. Does inspire me? Not really. But I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who don't like my style either. And if there's only one person who finds that inspiring, then I think it's worth sharing. We are all free to like (and dress) whatever we want, that being the 'funky pants' or just a casual pair of jeans (or a mini skirt in my case). Let your inner Portuguese girlie shine either way.

Desde que li o 'I Feel Bad About My Neck' (podem ler a minha review AQUI), fiquei super fã da Nora Ephron.

Since I read 'I Feel Bad About My Neck' (you can read my review HERE), I became a Nora Ephron fan. I watched many movies she wrote but I really wanted to read more of her books. I read a bunch of good reviews about 'Heartburn' (which actually also has a movie based on it) and my good friends were very kind to offer me the book on my birthday. Heartburn is the only novel by Nora Ephron, but the truth is that it's based on her life. This book is a fictionalized version of how her high-profile marriage exploded when her husband cheated on her while she was seven months pregnant with their second child. Saying this, it looks like it's going to be a very heavy and sad book, but it's not, It's amazing how Nora Ephron has the ability to make you laugh when you're reading about heartbreak. It's amazing how she can turn ordinary moments into comedy gold. She's such a good writer that this book almost feels like a warm hug, even when you are reading about such a hard thing as cheating and betrayal. But Nora Ephron really knows how to do it. And that includes recipes, Rachel, the main character of this book, is a cookbook author after all so be ready for lots of cooking references and literal recipes in the middle of the story. But that's another thing I loved about his book: how she combines food with life and relationships. If 'When Harry Met Sally' and 'You've Got Mail' (both written by her) are the movies to watch during Autumn, then 'Heartburn' is the book to read. I highly recommend it. And if you are going through a heartbreak or know someone who is, just buy this book, trust me.

I'll take these photos of me wearing my beloved Forever blazer to talk a little bit about the Djerf Avenue controversy. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about but if you don't, summing up, people are now trying to cancel Matilda Djerf (you can just search on TikTok and you can go more in-depth about the subject). So, about that: I'm so tired of people, in this case influencers, trying to bring other influencers down just to try to make themselves feel better. And doing content about it. Is it just me who feels very wrong to do content on such a negative note? I know it will probably bring lots of views, but is it worth it? Is it inspiring? Does it fulfil you? I'm pretty sure it doesn't. And I've seen this a lot lately. First case: an influencer that I've been following for a while launched a clothing brand, and you know what are the first stories she does about it? Making fun of influencers asking her to gift her some items. I'm not saying they are right, of course, if you like the brand, you should support it, after all, it's a new brand. But is it really necessary to do content about it? And shaming them? Especially, if you are an influencer yourself. Don't tell me that you have never asked for free stuff, because I don't believe it. We have all done it. I have. And I'm not ashamed to say it. And now all this Djerf Avenue controversy. I'm not going to say who's right or wrong, personally, I love the brand and the clothes I have from them are still my favourites ever, but if you decide to do content bringing people down, then you are definitely wrong. It really upsets me and makes me feel sick to my stomach. And several influencers that I used to follow, decided to jump on the bandwagon and create mean content about it. Well, it's not the content I want to see. There's so much negativity in the real world, when I go on social media I want to disconnect, laugh, relax and see some positivity. Let's be the reason why someone believes in good, not the opposite. We can all do better.

I'm so sorry for the amount of photos but I took two rolls of film with me to Italy and I really love the final result, I think I have here some of my favourite photos ever. I'm really glad I have this place because, at least, these photos are not just a post on social media that you see on the little screen of your phone (no shame if you're reading this on your phone but you can always check them later on your laptop). I hope you like these photos as much as I do. And I confess, creating this post really made me miss Italy.

So, as you probably saw, I was in Italy these last couple of days. It was my third time in the country and I really fell in love with it this time. I usually do a travel guide with a bunch of tips after my trips but since this time I visited a few different cities, I decided I was going to do something different. I asked you if you add any doubts on my Instagram and today I'll be answering them in this post. If any other question comes to your mind, just leave them in the comments and I'll reply asap.

I wasn't planning on bringing a new film diary so soon but I really missed shooting just for the fun of it. Lately, I only buy film when I go on vacation or somewhere else (unfortunately, film is very expensive nowadays) but I decided to buy some film and shoot the last summer days in my hometown. So here is the result. I really love how these turned out. I hope you like them too. And I might bring a new film diary very soon; stay tuned.

E, por fim, toda a história pareceu-me super forçada.

It has been a while since I read a book that I really didn't enjoy but Lizzie & Dante was one of them. So, summing up, the book tells the story of Lizzie who decides to take one last vacation in Elba, a sunny Italian island, and of course, falls in love with an Italian, Dante. I love reading books that take place in Italy so so far, so good. It sounds like the perfect summer read but, unfortunately, it is not, at least for me. To me, this book has a lot of big mistakes. First of all, there's no building of the relationship between the two main characters. One moment they are not interested in each other, the second they're spending every single day together. This would be understandable if they were teenagers, but they are not. They are in their 30s and 40s. Second, the secondary characters are very badly built. One moment you feel like you totally know them, and after a few chapters something major that's totally needed for you to imagine that character in your head is revealed, making you realise that you really didn't know those people at all. Let's just say that you imagine that a character is blonde and at the end of the book you find out she's a redhead after all. You would think being a redhead is something that should be mentioned in the beginning, but it's not (this is just an example for you to understand my point). And, last but not least, the whole story just felt very forced. Even though I know nothing about the author, it was the first time I read something by Mary Bly, while I was reading this book I was constantly thinking: I bet she's an American. I don't want to be mean, but I feel like Americans always portray Europe and Europeans (Italians in this case) like we are different species. All the Italian stereotypes are present on the pages of this book. It just feels very forced and not very creative, to be honest. I know a lot of people really like this book, but it's not for me. I really didn't like it.

Nada realmente me chama a atenção.

Let me start this post like I like the most: with a question. Couldn't the posts on Instagram Broadcast Channels be Stories? Well, as you might be aware, I created one myself but let me unpack this. So, a while ago, I had this idea of sharing with you all my favourite things happening in Porto. I thought about doing it maybe once a week on my Instagram Stories, but for some reason, it didn't feel right so I didn't go through with it. Jumping to Instagram realasing these Broadcast Channels and finding the perfect place to do it. The thing is: influencers are using them to share their life. I'm having tons of fun with my own channel but, unfortunately, I'm not subscribed to any other channel. Nothing speaks to me. It's just repetitive. They're not doing anything new. Influencers are doing exactly what they were doing in stories, but this time, it sounds a bit fake. Back in 2016, when Instagram released Stories, influencers were the first ones to jump on board saying that this would be the platform where they would show their real life. The behind the scenes and their true personality. Now, in 2023, Instagram releases a new thing and now it's completely different, now they are really showing the real deal. Their raw version. So, where do we stand? That's exactly what you claimed before. Were you lying before when you were using Stories? How can I know you're not lying now? Okay, sorry, rant over. But can you understand my point? I'm not saying that I'm better than anyone, I'm just saying that that doesn't speak to me. Not even reality shows that have the word "reality" in them share reality so don't say your channel is going to be your diary because it's just a filter version of it. Yeah, sure, the photos or videos you post might not be as beautiful or edited as the ones you share on your feed, but they're still a curated version of your REAL life. So let me know if you know any cool Instagram Broadcast channels, I would love to join some with great content.

A escrita dela é brilhante. E, outras, talvez vás no futuro.

I'm a huge fan of Dolly Alderton. Not only as a writer but I love everything this girl puts her hands on. This book was launched a while ago but only now I decided to buy it and give it a go. I haven't felt this excited to read a book in a very long time. It is basically a collection from her agony aunt column in the Sunday Times. It's divided into seven sections: dating, friendship, relationships, family, sex, break-ups & exes and body & soul. First of all, there's nothing groundbreaking or new here. Her answers are pretty much what you would reply to your best friend if they were in that kind of situation (at least I hope so, I'm assuming all of you reading this are good and empathic people). But it might be my favourite book by her. It's so comforting. It's so wholesome. Reading this book feels like having a coffee with Dolly. It's full of life advice. Some you will relate to, some you won't, and some you will probably relate to in the future. You just realize how all humans are full of questions and insecurities, just like you. And me. It feels like a warm hug. If the last book I reviewed was perfect to read on the beach, this one is perfect for this time of year when you still want to read something easy but comforting while you're cosy in your bed with a blanket on your legs and a warm cappuccino (or a glass of red wine). Ghosts wasn't really my cup of tea, but this book made me fall in love with Dolly's writing all over again. Highly recommend.
