Deixem-me explicar porquê.

Please don't take this post too seriously because I don't understand much about psychology, but I can say that I understand a bit about influencers. We are (and please note that I'm included in this) a very interesting species with very bizarre behaviours, so I think we are (even if just a little) egocentric people. Let me explain to you why.

We Think Everyone Misses Us

How many times do we say "I know I have been missing" or how many times have I started a post by saying "I know I haven't post in a while" but I came to the conclusion that no one cares. I should have launched a post yesterday and I created that pressure in myself, but no one cares if I post on Wednesday or Thursday, or if I post at all. I know I'm just one in a million people you follow, but we can stop thinking we are that special influencer you really love.

When People Show Us Love, We Share It

Eu fiz isto ontem, não me julguem.

I swear I try not to do this often, but sometimes we just can't help it. When someone shares on social media that they like us and like to follow us, we just can't thank that person and move on. No! Of course, we thank them, but then we share that message. Because everyone that already follows us has to see how much people like us. I did this yesterday, don't judge me.

We Post Photos...Of Ourselves

This is to me the top of the egocentrism and here I am talking about this with photos of myself illustrating this post. I really find it very interesting: why did we decide to take photos ourselves and share those photos with the world? I know why I did it because I wanted to share my personal style. But why? Because I think I have a fucking great style. Why did a Youtuber decide to record his day and share it with everyone? If this isn't egocentrism, then I don't know what it is.

The other day, while I was scrolling through Instagram, I saw an Instagram Story by Bárbara Inês where she was saying how much she enjoys photoshoots that she plans. I really related to this so today I decided to write about that subject. The photos you are seeing are the result of a photoshoot I organized and that I enjoyed very much. Everything started with this swimsuit from Gecko Swimwear that I love and that is so my style, but it needed a special place to be shot at. The perfect place came into my mind right away, Mouco Hotel, and I was so happy for being able to shoot there. It's an amazing place here in Porto that besides being a hotel, it's also a bar, restaurant and show venue, but the architecture is out of this world. With these two things planned, the last thing to decide was the photographer, which came to me very naturally as well. I've worked with Ana Alves before, and I truly love her work. She takes beautiful photos, and always leaves me very comfortable in front of the camera, so when she said yes I couldn't be happier. This was the result. I'm so proud and so happy with the final result. I really love to create these photoshoots, even if the photos are only for my content with no money involved. It really is the best, and it's when you realize how much you love to do what you're doing.

And so the Porto Santo content comes to an end, and with my favourite post to publish: the analogue photos. While I was there shooting photos with my phone, I was always thinking that those photos weren't showing the beauty I was seeing, but these photos do. Looking at the colour of the water in the first photo, makes me miss it so much and want to go back asap. I hope you like these photos as much as I do.

Don't Panic" ou "What Body Types Look Good in Low Rise Jeans". Literalmente.

Ever since low-rise became a trend that I've been hearing a lot of girl saying: I love it, but I don't think I can pull it of, my belly is too flacid. Or I just don't have the body for it. This makes me really sad because sometimes this thoughts also come through my mind. Luckily, I'm at a place where I can just shake them off and wear the clothes that I feel like wearing. I was swollen in this day and I still wore the damn skirt that I love so much. So what if I'm swollen? So what if I'm flacid? It's my body, I have to live with it for the rest of my life, I just better love it and wear the clothes that I love so much. Fashion trends should be open to everyone, but, unfortunelty, they are not. I still can remember in the 2000s who wore low-rise jeans. Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, all women who had the perfectly flat torso. It was a time when anything other than thin and young, wasn't consider beautiful. Sure, we are living different times now, body positivity is a hot topic and it was never so much talked about, but I do feel like the idolisition of this body standard is slowly coming back. Just search "low-rise" on Google and the titles of the articles that show up are "Low-rise jeans are back. Don't Panic" or "What Body Types Look Good In Low Rise Jeans?". I thought we were living in times where this kind of stuff didn't matter anymore but looks like it's not the case. What's a bit different now it's the content we decide to consume, but I always end up seeing the same people wearing this trend, people like Bella Hadid or Kendall Jenner that have the so-called "perfect body". It feels like not only this trend is back, the 2000s are back as well. Literally. And not in a good way. So if you like low-rise (or any other trend that you like and don't feel comfortable wearing) just wear it. It doesn't matter if you're tall, short, thin or fat. We're in 2022 for god's sake. Low-rise might be back, but I will not let toxic body standards be back as well.

Last week I was a bit off but, if you follow me on Instagram, you know it was because I was on vacation in Porto Santo. It was my first time on the island, and I loved it. Beautiful landscapes, fantastic food, beaches that looked like paradise, you named it. So today I bring you my Porto Santo Travel Guide so that you can also visit all these unique places I went to and get to know the island. I hope you like it.

What To Do

My god, where to begin with? When I posted on my Instagram that I was reading this book, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, all of you warned me that it was going to be a rollercoaster and some of you even wished me good luck. This book follows the lives of four friends (Willem, JB, Malcolm and Jude) who move to New York after graduation. This sounds pretty average and normal until you find out more about Jude's backstory who ends up being the centre of the story. To sum up his life, he goes through abandonment, violence, physical and emotional abuse, forced prostitution and psychological trauma. And the writer spares us no mercy when revealing all of this. It's a horrible story. It's by far the most devastating book I have ever read, but I loved it. I don't know what that says about me, but I couldn't stop reading it. Yeah, sometimes the things being told were so graphic and so horrible that I had to put it down for a while and do something else, but then I found myself wanting to read it again, wanting to know what's going to happen with these characters. It's a book with a lot of trigger warnings so I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. It's such a difficult journey that I can't suggest everyone take it. Like I read someone saying: "This is an excellent, maybe perfect book, and I will not recommend it to anyone". It's a bit too much to say this, but I totally get it. I loved it, I know I will read it again in the future, but read it at your own risk.

P.S.: I didn't cry.

"Wasn't friendship its own miracle, the finding of another person who made the entire lonely world seem somehow less lonely?"

In our capitalist society, we are constantly made to believe that our job has to be the main focus in our lives and what defines us. Have you realised that every time someone asks us to talk about ourselves one of the first things we mention is our job? Maybe we start by saying our name, our age but then our job. I'm Helena, I'm 25 years old and I'm a content writer/creator. But is that true? Am I really a content writer? Sure it's something I spend a lot of time doing, but does it really define who I am? It's something I do, but it's not who I am. But it's still overwhelming how easily we use our jobs to define ourselves. Working for a renowned company might look good on your resume, but does it matter that much in real life? Of course, you might consider it a big success and something you're proud of, but it shouldn't be your identity. I read somewhere a quote about this that makes a lot of sense to be: "other people won't remember you by the job you had but by how you made them feel" and I totally agree. So next time someone asks you to talk about yourself or ask you who you are, answer with the things you love, what you're passionate about, your dreams, and what makes you really happy. I'll go first. I'm Helena, I'm 25 years old, I love to take photos, when I'm not working I'm probably reading, I'm a dog and cat mom and the little things in life (like watching the sunset or having a picnic at the beach) are what makes me really happy. What about you? Who are you?

Enviem-me as vossas ideias, mostrem-me a vossa visão e vamos fazer arte juntos.

For the longest time that was very hard for me to shoot with other people. As an introvert (or ambivert, but that's the topic of another blog post), taking photos doesn't come naturally to me. Actually, when I first started this blog I took all the photos by myself. But after doing it for so many years, I am now used to it. I was so used to it that I was stuck in my comfort zone for the longest time. I took photos with my friends and that was it. Until I realise how much fun it is when two creatives get together and create something completely different. I have my vision and my aesthetic but I love to change things up once in a while, and collaborating with other people has been an amazing experience. Of course, I like to work with people I identify with but other people will always have something different to say, something different put out there, and I love that. These photos are the result of one of those collaborations that went really well. Ana is an amazing photographer and I love what she did here. So here I am calling out all the creatives. If by any chance you like my work and want to collaborate with me, let's do it. Send me your ideas, and your vision and let's do some art together.

I started reading this book with no expectations at all. Actually, I've read 'The Island' by the same writer and even though I enjoyed it, it didn't blow me away, but I loved this one. I'm talking about 'The Return' by Victoria Hislop. The main character is Sonia, a middle-aged woman who lives an unhappy marriage, but finds her happiness in dance classes. Together with her best friend, she heads to Granada to take a dance course. While on her trip, she meets an elderly waiter at a café who tells her the story of the Ramirez family and the Spanish Civil War. And here is where the book starts to get interesting. I knew nothing about the Spanish Civil War and its brutality. I literally live in the country next to Spain and I didn't learn in school what the Spanish people went through. So I really liked that, to know more about a period in history that I knew so little while being told a story.  Some parts of the story are very predictable, but I really liked the book. It's the perfect beach-read (I'm already planning a post about this with some suggestions so stay tuned for that as well).

post in collaboration w/Radsow

I'm pretty sure you have a sweatshirt seating in your wardrobe right now. Maybe you're even wearing one while you're reading this and this just proves that sweatshirts are the greatest piece of clothing of all time. You know that I am a very big fan of basics and I truly think everyone should have a couple of good sweatshirts in their wardrobes. They will literally take you anywhere. You can wear them around the house, to the gym, for a day around town, you name it. You can even watch the Instagram Reels I created sharing three different outfits with the same sweatshirt (watch it HERE) but even in this post, you can see me wearing them in two completely different ways. The sweatshirts I'm wearing are from Radsow and they already are my favourite sweatshirts in my wardrobe. They have the perfect fit (I'm wearing a small in both of them so they fit a bit oversized which I love), they are super cosy and they just feel like home. You can never go wrong with a good sweatshirt. What are the basics that are essential to you? Let me know in the comments below.

It's funny how we all share on social media an idea of us or a part of ourselves, but if we turn the lens around and analyse what these social media apps suggest to us to see, the algorithm that everyone talks about, we can understand what we really are. Have you thought about this before? To give you an example, my "For you" page summarizes to: outfits ideas, cute dog videos and nice cafés around the world. If this isn't me, then I don't really know myself. It's funny (and scary at the same time) how much these social media apps know about us and choose the content we really want to see (I know they don't choose, it's all based on the amount of time we watch certain videos, our likes, comments...but you get the idea). Do you think we're getting to a point where these algorithms know us better than we know ourselves? Maybe if I had to choose the categories I wanted to watch on TikTok, I wouldn't choose dogs, but here I am watching cute dogs videos in a loop. So, I would love it if you could answer the question above: what does your algorithm say about you? Mine says that I am a millennial (I could never watch those dance videos that Gen Z loves so much), that I am a dog mom and love to stroll around town knowing all the new cafés in a fabulous outfit.

To be honest with you, I was planning on posting something else today but, as you know, this last weekend I went to Alentejo, Évora to be more specific, and I thought I should do a travel guide about this city. Portugal has many beautiful places and my will to visit them has grown a lot after this weekend. So here is my Évora travel guide.
